Inside the EA Kids Program & the Children It’s Reaching

Article at a Glance

What is the EA Kids program and who does it serve?

EA Kids is Every Arkansan’s kids and youth program. It’s a place where children across Central Arkansas can get homework help, eat a nutritious meal, build relationships with caring adults, and experience the joy of being a kid. It serves children and families who need more than the school day provides, and it shows up consistently, whether in the building or out in their neighborhoods.

What does a typical day look like for a kid in the program?

Homework help, dinner, activities, and time with staff who know their name. But it’s more than that: it’s spiritual guidance, life lessons, counseling when kids need it, and a consistent atmosphere where children are encouraged and loved. For many kids, it’s the most stable, caring environment they have outside the home.

Why does after-school support matter so much for families?

Because the hours between school and bedtime are long, and for working parents, they can be really hard to cover. Shaneka (more on her story below!) is a single mom who works evenings. Without EA Kids, her children would be home alone. With it, they’re fed, get homework support, and are surrounded by people who care about them. For families navigating that reality, a program like this changes everything.

How does EA Kids reach kids who can’t come to them?

By going to them. Every week, the EA Kids Mobile team reaches 17 neighborhoods across Central Arkansas, bringing food, fun, and consistent presence directly into apartment complexes and communities that might not otherwise have access to these kinds of programs. If the kids can’t come to EA Kids, EA Kids comes to the kids.

How can I get involved or support the program?

We love that you want to help! You can give to help cover the cost of meals, programming, and staff who make all of this possible. You can volunteer at EA Kids Afterschool Monday through Friday from 2:30 to 5:30pm. Or you can start with a Serve Saturday and see the work up close. However you show up, there’s a place for you in it.

School ends at 3pm. For many kids, what happens next is figured out. A parent’s home, an activity to get to, or a snack waiting on the counter. The afternoon has a shape, and someone is there to help hold it.

For many other kids, 3pm looks different.

A parent works evenings and won’t be home until after bedtime, or homework goes unfinished because no one is there to help. Dinner doesn’t happen, or it happens as whatever’s cheapest and easiest. This is the daily reality for many families across Central Arkansas, and it plays out in the hours most people never think about.

The after-school window is one of the most consequential parts of a child’s day. What fills it, or doesn’t, shapes how kids do academically, how they feel emotionally, and the kind of consistent adult presence they have during years that matter enormously. A child with somewhere safe to go, someone to help with homework, and a meal waiting for them is set up for a fundamentally different evening than one without those things.

That’s the gap EA Kids exists to fill, and for the families who need it, it’s one of the most important things a community can offer.

Meet Shaneka

Shaneka is a mom of two from Little Rock, and her days start like most parents’.

She gets her kids ready for school, gets them out the door, and then heads to work, knowing that by the time she gets home, her oldest will barely be awake and her youngest will be asleep. She works evenings. That’s the reality. For a long time, it meant carrying the weight of wondering what her kids were doing, whether they’d done their homework, and whether they’d eaten anything real for dinner.

It’s the kind of worry that doesn’t show up on a to-do list but never fully goes away.

When Shaneka enrolled her kids in EA Kids, something shifted. Her children had somewhere to go. Somewhere with dinner, homework help, counseling, and staff who knew them. Shaneka could go to work without that worry weighing on everything else.

“This place is a lifesaver for me as a mom,” she said. “When I’m working in the afternoons or evenings, I don’t have to worry about my kids being home alone. They help with homework, provide counseling, and even make holidays special.”

Her kids feel it too. They have relationships with the staff, love the atmosphere, and come home cared for, not just supervised. For Shaneka, that peace of mind is everything.

Her story isn’t unusual. Across Central Arkansas, parents navigate the same tension: loving their kids deeply, working hard to provide, and needing a community to help fill the gap. EA Kids is here to be that community.

What EA Kids Looks Like

Families who haven’t experienced it firsthand can find it hard to picture what EA Kids includes. Here’s a closer look.

After-School Program (Monday-Friday, 2:30-5:30pm)

At the EA Kids Little Rock facility, kids come after school to a place that’s less like a program and more like a second home. They get homework help from people who sit with them, a hot dinner, and time with staff who know their names and stories. Alongside academics, kids receive spiritual guidance, life lessons, and counseling as needed. Then when the holidays come around, the EA Kids team makes sure those are special too.

Summer Programming

When school lets out, EA Kids doesn’t. Summer programming keeps kids engaged, fed, and learning during the months when the school-day structure disappears, and the need is highest. Nutritious meals, cool activities, and educational programming are all available at no cost to families who need it most.

Mobile Outreach

Not every kid can make it to the EA Kids facility, so the team goes to them. Every week, the mobile outreach team reaches 17 neighborhoods across Central Arkansas, showing up in apartment complexes and communities with food, fun, and consistent presence. This is how EA Kids connects with kids who would otherwise never be reached.

Community Service Programs

Beyond daily programming, EA Kids creates opportunities to connect, contribute, and create a sense of belonging that goes beyond academics. Games, activities, and community projects are all designed to show kids they matter to the people around them and to be part of something bigger than themselves.

More Than An Afternoon

“We’re not just filling the hours between school and bedtime. We’re investing in the next generation of Arkansas: kids who will grow up knowing what it feels like to be believed in, and who will carry that forward into everything they do. That’s the long game, and it’s worth every bit of what it takes.”

— Drew Davis

Why This Age and Stage Matters

The years between childhood and adulthood are some of the most formative a person goes through.

Kids with consistent, caring adult presence after school tend to do better academically, show up more confidently socially, and develop a stronger sense of who they are and what they can do. Over months and years, that consistency builds something in a kid that’s hard to quantify but impossible to miss.

Nutritious meals are part of that equation too. A hungry child struggles to focus and absorb much of anything, whether that’s a homework assignment or a conversation with a caring adult. EA Kids addresses both at once, which is why the combination matters. It’s not just academic support alongside food. Instead, it recognizes that a child’s physical and developmental needs are connected, and that meeting one without the other only goes so far.

Beyond meals and homework help, EA Kids offers something harder to capture in a program description: the experience of being a kid in a place that’s glad you’re there. That experience shapes how children see themselves, what they believe is possible, and who they grow up to become.

What Makes EA Kids Different

After-school programs exist across Central Arkansas, but EA Kids is more than that.

The difference is in the philosophy behind it. EA Kids isn’t designed to get kids through the afternoon and send them home. It’s designed to invest in who they’re becoming. That means academic support and nutritious meals, yes, but also spiritual guidance, life lessons, and the kind of consistent relational investment that doesn’t show up on a program checklist.

Shaneka said it simply: “The positive atmosphere puts my mind at ease when they’re not with me.” That peace of mind comes from a team that cares about her kids as people.

That’s what sets EA Kids apart from a program that fills time. It fills something deeper: the need every child has to be known, encouraged, and surrounded by adults who believe their future is worth investing in. Over time, that kind of environment shapes who kids are and what they carry with them long after they’ve grown up and moved on.

Every Kid Deserves This, And You Can Be Part of Making It Possible

The kids in EA Kids right now are there because people chose to show up and support the work. But Shaneka’s family isn’t the only one navigating those after-school hours without enough support, and EA Kids still has room to grow. More kids across Central Arkansas need what this program offers, and we can reach them if the community decides to show up.

You can be part of making that possible.

Give. Your support covers the cost of meals, programming, and the staff who make EA Kids what it is. A consistent monthly gift creates the stability the program provides for the kids it serves.
