Picture Your Lunch Table…

Now imagine that one of the kids sitting there didn’t know where their next meal was coming from. In Arkansas, that’s the reality for nearly 168,000 children.

That’s 1 in 5 kids growing up without enough food or money to cover the basics.

But here’s the thing: when enough families decide to show up, big numbers start to shrink.

Meet Shaneka Carrotheis, a mom of two from Little Rock, whose days start like any other mom’s. She gets her kids ready for school, but unlike most, she doesn’t see them in the afternoons when they get home.

Working evenings, she often comes back home tired, thinking about feeding her kids and helping them with homework. She barely catches a glimpse of her oldest before bedtime, and her youngest is already asleep. This is the reality for many single moms like Shaneka.

Feeling overwhelmed and needing support, Shaneka decided to enroll her kids in the Every Arkansan free after-school program (formerly known as the Arkansas Dream Center), where they could have dinner and tutoring while she was at work. This lifted a huge burden off Shaneka’s shoulders, allowing her to focus on being a mom.

“This place is a lifesaver for me as a mom. When I’m working in the afternoons or evenings, I don’t have to worry about my kids being home alone. They help with homework, provide counseling, and even make holidays special,” Shaneka shared.

Not only has this team been a blessing for Shaneka, but her kids also love it. It’s a place where they feel encouraged, supported, and loved.

“My kids adore the Every Arkansan kids programs. They have great relationships with the staff, and the positive atmosphere puts my mind at ease when they’re not with me,” Shaneka said.

It’s stories like Shaneka that remind us of why we do what we do here. And with your support, we can help even more kids and families throughout our communities.
